Dan Stetson

Dan Stetson paints a vivid picture of the Ocean Lab mission to inspire others to volunteer and join the team. He acts as an advocate and cheerleader, continually thanking volunteers for their valuable contributions of time and expertise. In addition to his community outreach, he is actively involved in the restoration and breeding of the Sunflower Sea Star at the Ocean Institute, and plays a vital role in the ongoing decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant.

Delaney Sauer

Delaney Sauer has been working alongside the Shark Lab, where she deploys and maintains underwater equipment that gathers crucial data on tagged animals and the surrounding environment. This equipment helps monitor the Southern California coastline. With strong El NiƱo conditions expected, she anticipates a busy summer, as the Shark Lab team is already observing and tagging numerous juvenile white sharks. The Shark Lab research in action will be showcased this September.

Chris Lowe

Chris Lowe oversees a targeted CSULB Shark Lab project investigating the effectiveness of the endothermic system in juvenile white sharks. His team engineers temperature regulation monitoring devices that are secured within small flotation capsules. These capsules are carefully hidden inside mackerel, which are then fed to the juvenile sharks so the devices can accurately track their internal temperatures. Eventually, the devices pass through the sharks and float to the beach, where they can be retrieved and returned to the lab for data analysis.

Andrea Stockert

As the Ocean Lab Executive Director, Andrea Stockert is launching a new scholarship partnership with Blue Green Expeditions that will help young science advocates take part in life-changing polar expeditions beginning in 2027 and 2028. By connecting emerging voices with real-world field science, polar researchers, and expedition-based learning, the program is designed to inspire a new generation of ocean storytellers, climate leaders, and community advocates. She is also in post-production on a feature-length documentary centered on polar science, citizen research, and the rapidly changing oceans at the ends of the Earth. The film follows scientists in the field as they conduct plankton tows, collect samples, and study how climate change is affecting fragile polar marine ecosystems. As the polar regions become one of the clearest litmus tests for a warming ocean, the documentary highlights the growing role of citizen scientists who help collect data, witness the changes firsthand, and return home as advocates for polar protection.
